House sales have tumbled to their lowest recorded level as buyers continue to stay clear of the troubled property market, according to new figures released by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Estate agents sold an average of just 17.4 properties each in the three months to the end of May 2008.

It is the worst figures since records began 30 years ago. The slump is now ‘a very real danger to ‘the wider economy. The housing news came as official figures, showed living standards.

Interest rate hikes could be on the cards even as the economy grinds to a halt. Soaring manufacturers, costs and prices, combined with fresh oil price fears, triggered the sharpest gilts market sell-off for 15 years.

Economists described the 27.9 per cent rise in producer-price inflation, the price manufacturers pay for materials and fuel, as ‘absolutely horrendous and staggering. The Bank of England Governor, Mervyn King, in a speech to bankers delivered a grim assessment on the UK economy. He stated that households faced rising inflation and falling economic growth.

Mr King said, “After a decade or more of economic stability, we are now facing a period of rising inflation and falling economic growth. Part of the reason for this change of economic weather is that we are passing through the most prolonged period of financial turmoil that most of us can remember.”

His comments came as the cost of some types of home loans hit an eight year high; with some economists predicting the average interest on a fixed rate mortgage could rise to 7 per cent by the end of 2008.

With manufacturing prices rising to record levels, experts are now predicting that the bank's Monetary Policy Committee will increase rates two or three times in the next 12 months, despite Britain facing a severe housing slow down.
