Editor’s Letter As the money markets grounded to a halt earlier this year, the Bank of England stepped in with a £50 billion scheme, designed to get the money market wheels moving again. Despite initially being suggested as a short-term strategy and intended to last a couple of months, the pressure on the Bank of England is growing to extend the asset swap scheme. There is some controversy as to why the commercial banks are keen to have the scheme extended, with insiders claiming that they are simply using it as a cheap way to refinance their business, while reducing the number of financial products on offer. The scheme was devised so that the mortgage market in particular would not ground to a halt, but this is exactly what is happening. This puts the government in a very tricky situation. Do they back an extension to the scheme and risk the wrath of the public, or do they end the scheme and risk seeing the money market contract even further? It is not surprising to see the Bank of England refrain from moving interest rates higher, as the fight against both inflation and a slowing housing market continue unabated. Economists have highlighted the fact, that the government did not make contingency plans for the ‘bad times,’ while they were riding the crest of the economic boom. This has left the public purse drastically short of funding, tax receipts set to nose dive and little left in the pot for the next few years.
