First-time buyers welcome the Government announcement of a £1 billion package of measures including eliminating a 1 percent tax paid by buyers of homes costing less than £175,000, or $312,000, and a program to give interest-free 30 percent down payment loans to first-time buyers with moderate incomes.

British house prices have fallen about 10 percent in the past year, having more or less tripled in the decade before.

The average British house now costs about 5.8 time’s average annual earnings, which is amongst the highest such ratios in the world.

It is widely publicised that the freezing of the housing market is beginning to impact on the general UK economy, as lawyers, real estate agents, builders and others are affected and left with little to do. It is true that the property and finance sectors are seeing a rise in unemployment.

The ‘wait and see’ policy adopted by the MPC and the side-line approach taken by the government to intercede in the mortgage and banking sector, will continue to add to the pain and further uncertainty.

Their strategy, ‘to do very little’ (in an already unsettling fragile housing market) and allow house prices to fall back to a more sustainable level, sends a message to everyone else to batten down. Ride out the impact of the credit crunch the best you can.

A survey from Fish4homes has revealed that Brits are still eager to get onto the property ladder despite the current economic climate, but are prepared to be patient rather than rushing in to pick up a bargain.

Out of those surveyed 56% own a property in the UK, with 52% of those home owners having bought their first property between the age of 21 and 30 years. Of those who do not own a property in the UK right now, 25% said they were staying with family, and 66% renting, while the rest are in the process of buying. The majority hope to purchase their first home between the age of 31 and 40 years.
