Editor’s Letter Chancellor Alistair Darling moved to reassure the UK mortgage and housing markets by promising that the government would learn from America’s mistakes. He stated that the British government would not rely on panic measures to combat the current economic crisis and criticised the US for introducing a poorly thought through recovery plan. Nothing is worse than coming forward with a plan that isn’t sufficiently developed, where questions can’t be answered, which ended up with trillions of dollars unaccounted for as a result of this credit crunch since July 2007. The government will be injecting £50 billion of funds into the banking system to help ease concerns about lending and the continual operating of our financial institutions, with a promise to advance more (Up to £350 billion). This is good news for developers, builders, housing associations, estate agents, mortgage brokers, construction professionals and trades personnel, builders merchants, home owners, and home buyers. What as become clear through this horrible episode, is how vulnerable consumers and businesses are to the banking system and the need for ALL of us to tread more carefully and to be more aware of what is actually going on in our society and to not borrow money beyond our means.
