Editor’s Letter The UK economy is crying out for government intervention to ensure the banks begin lending again. Our high streets across the UK are in desperate need of stimulus, reduced interest rates and VAT alone are not enough without the banks agreeing to lend fairly to both consumers and small businesses. A code of conduct, including the sanction of substantial fines if the banks refuse to play ball, is essential for the buoyancy of both the housing market and the wider economy. Low rates will increase confidence in the market but will not increase mortgage approvals. Bringing buoyancy back to the market lies not only with low interest rates but crucially also in new lending. Government and lenders must do more to encourage first time buyers on to the property ladder in order to reverse the current downturn in the market. I’m not sure why it always takes me by surprise, but the transition from a heat-wave summer to full-blown winter seems to come quicker every year. Therefore I am always reluctant to speak of Christmas prematurely, but unless you enjoy a frantic rush around the high street, it’s probably best not to leave your shopping until the turkey meets its ill-fated destiny.
Christmas is a time of good cheer, a time for reflection, a time for giving and a time for sharing.
So remember while December, Brings the only Christmas day. In the year let there be Christmas, In the things you do and say.
